We are very happy to welcome Jonathan Schwartz in person to present works on 16mm film. Often based on the prinicple of field recordings, travels, collage, and sound/image amplifications his films write a unique language of their own.

"Schwartz’s films are windows that show the artist in the process of being expressed, looking for a balance between contentment and fear. He himself jumps steadily, as far as he can get each time. Either in his own or foreign territory, Schwartz is not a hunter, but a whisperer. There is a sense of awareness and appreciation in all of his work, of looking, breathing, and grasping without suffocating. With the organic quality of 16mm film, Schwartz crafts a world of faces, textures, and places that invoke and evoke language without unnecessary adjectives." (Mónica Savirón)

Jonathan Schwartz makes short films that circulate primarily in an experimental and non-fiction film context. Films are generally constructed from fragmented collections and findings, from both exterior and interior spaces. His films have exhibited in many festivals including New York Film Festival "Views from the Avant-Garde" and “Projections”, TIFF "Wavelengths", Rotterdam, Ann Arbor, Images, Media City, Recontres Internationales, Exis, TIE, and others. Recent solo screenings include UnionDocs, Cinema Project, and San Francisco Cinematheque. In 2010,  he was included in The Film Society of Lincoln Center's Avant-Garde Poll in Film Comment as one of 25 Filmmakers for the 21st century. He holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art, lives in Brattleboro, Vermont and is an associate professor at Keene State College.  (newenglandhomemovietour.com)

Possible ways that a familiar image or sound or movement or moment seems both recognizable and necessary. A season for now with winter frost and body temperature rising against the quiet quiet of snow. It’s not too hard to buy a plane ticket and stand amongst strangers with comfort, with the sounds in your chest increasing beats. Smile and acknowledge a certain kind of privilege, a kind that conjures thoughts of others who move through this or that space. Move through the space. And point it back to your own home—I think it is my home or at least it sounds that way when described to others who don’t live there. The animals move and the flowers return in a season that follows. The warmer sun can bring lust or longing—still negotiating a difference but will welcome them both—write something down, the longer days propose to be documented but try to simplify, especially when the descriptions are jumbled. Or at least think about heading north and looking back down from this small mountain. The sky grows from here and I thought of you as I squinted towards the sun. I am sorry for not telling you sooner, apologize for something, maybe for waiting all this time. Or a conversation around personal fragments and external reverberations. (Jonathan Schwartz)
